My Dr. put me on Sarafem for mood swings. .?
My Dr. put me on Sarafem for mood swings. I would like some input from people that have actually took it.

sarafem is SLIGHTLY different than prozac. i've taken both and trust me i know! i really liked serafem because i only had to take it when i needed it. the dr had me take it on the few days leading up to and during my period to help with my mood swings. most of the time i noticed a big difference. some days it gave me that emotionally numb feeling which in my opinion was waaaay better than being so mean and moody. prozac on the other hand because of the chemical makeup has to be taken regularly for 4-6 weeks to get the full effect! good luck and i hope you feel better soon! By any chance do you have PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder)? It's the most intense form of PMS... like PMS times a million. I have PMDD, it cropped up on me after having a severe case of PPD (postpartum depression). I was on many meds for the PPD, including Sarafem/Prozac... however, when the PMDD came about, none of those meds worked on it. I finally started taking Yaz for the PMDD back in October and it has literally saved my life. Sarafem/Prozac is one of the main meds that doctors prescribe to try to treat PMDD, for some of my friends it has been working. Give it a try for at least a couple of months or so, and if it doesn't help, then perhaps an increase in dosage might be needed or a switch of meds. Good luck to you. Has anyone taken SARAFEM?
I was prescribed Sarafem by my ob/gyn for pmdd. Now I see alot of negative comments online about the drug. Has anyone on here ever taken it, if so, please tell me of your own experience.
Asked by Tressa Dehaas 3 months ago.
I took it for about 6 months for ppmd several years ago. I felt better on it. It helped me a lot! I would take it again if I needed it. Sarafem is prozac and it has been prescribed to millions of people with great success over the years. If you have questions, you really should talk to your ob/gyn or pharmasist. All meds come with possible side effects, but drs consider them before prescribing. Every person is different, you may not have any side effects at all. As for negative comments online...IMO human nature is to complain, people who have good results don't go around bragging. Answered by Lemuel Mandarino 3 months ago.

The Sarafem is really expensive...my insurance covers everything but $60 of it and well the extra 60 a month is costly. Is there any other drug that I could ask my doctor about that may not be as costly. The Sarafem seems to work. I have tried to go a month without it and it was bad...i cried one second and cursed someone the next...i was out of control...for a week. Any advice would be great. Sarafem is in the same family as Prozac. Talk to your Doctor and see if you can get the generic form of Prozac as it is a whole lot cheaper and will do the same thing for you . Answered by Katina Sigers 3 months ago.
Sarafem is Prozac. Sarafem is marketed for PMDD and put in pretty capsules....so they jack up the price. Really....Ask your doctor if you can take Prozac instead.. Answered by Tomas Frasier 3 months ago.
Iwas on 40 mg of sarafem and my doctor just perscribed 20mg of fluexetine?
I needed to go a cheaper way so he precribed 20mg of the new pill. I dont knowmuch about meds but would'nt that mean I am taking less. I dont want to go down hill because of him perscribing me the wrong amount!!
Asked by Margene Dingfelder 3 months ago.
These medications are one in the same, with the exception of their dose. Both are fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem). Let your doctor know, if you haven't done so already, that the dose you've been taking is 40mg. Otherwise, just monitor how you feel. Sometimes these medications are dosed arbitrarily, and it's the clinical outcome that is actually monitored. That being said, if you feel ok now, and you've been on the new dose for a couple of weeks, then you're set. If you feel worse than before, give your doctor a call for sure. Best of luck to you. P.S. Taking 40mg daily of fluoxetine should cost only about 8 dollars per month. Answered by Lise Desorbo 3 months ago.
Hey my love, these meds are associated with depression and, funny enough, weight loss, or the lack of. You're not bulemic or anorexic are you? If so, your doctor has prescribed the equivalent meds to keep you on the right track. Not less, just the cheaper version. There is a site online you can check your meds out, if you are worried. yes, they are exactly the same. Made by the same company. Sarafem was created for women who didn't like the idea of being given antidepressants, so they colored it purple and said it was for PMS Answered by Kathlyn Behrman 3 months ago.

Sarafem is the generic equivalent to Prozac, I believe... I suffer from severe PMDD as well. Have you tried Yaz? It's the birth control pill that was recently approved by the FDA to treat PMDD. I was on so many meds for postpartum depression, and none of them helped me with the PMDD, not even Prozac. I began taking Yaz, and let me tell you, it's my miracle pill. I'm not on anymore antidepressants. BTW... I don't need Yaz for the birth control... just for the pmdd. Answered by Terrence Mcconkey 3 months ago.
These drugs take a few weeks to take affect and can take as long as 6 weeks for full effect to take place. Just taking the drug for a few days and stopping isn't going to be as affective. Continue taking the medicine daily and you will notice an overall difference. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. Answered by Homer Bicknase 3 months ago.
Sarafem and Prozac are both brand names for "fluoxetine". Fluoxetine is the generic name for both and it is MUCH less expensive than either brand name. It is very safe to take generics like this. Answered by Jerri Abels 3 months ago.
exactly the same. the only difference is the marketing and dosing regimen. Answered by Dorcas Bochenski 3 months ago.
Is there really difference between Prozac and Sarafem (sister drugs) or not?
Asked by Ouida Bondroff 3 months ago.
There is no chemical difference between the two that I have found. The reason Sarafem exists is because the patent expired on Prozac which left other companies the ability to patent it and trademark it, etc. The two likely look different from the other. Answered by Mathew Gutierrez 3 months ago.
There are no differences chemically. Sarafem has a purple cap and is repackaged to appeal to women who may not feel there issue should or would be treated by an antidepressant. The manufacturer is the same. Prozac is white and green. -a clinical pharmacist Answered by Nicolas Zarro 3 months ago.
They are exactly the same drug. They just have different names and different packaging. Answered by Rachell Lopresti 3 months ago.
yes people react to each of them differently and each have different side effects ie one puts on more weight but one could make you more unhappy. xxx Answered by Haley Arnholt 3 months ago.

What are over the counter antidepressants?
are paxil or sarafem?
Asked by Leighann Cobble 3 months ago.
no. paxil isn't. not sure about sarafem but i for the best results i would go with a doctor's advice. i would try st. johns wort, or other like herbal medications. you can find it at your local health food store and possibly supermarket. st. johns wort may help, but a prescription medication would do better. an easy way to feel happier is by exercising. it's scientifically proven. also, stay on a normal sleep routine, and eat healthy. How would you rate Sarafem?
I have just started taking Sarafem to treat PMDD. Has anyone taken this? If so what are your opinions about this medicine. Like how long does it take to kick in, how has it helped you, etc. Thanks!!
Asked by Kimberlie Syer 3 months ago.
I haven't taken it, but I've been in a position close to marketing and development info. It usually provides good results. It's the same chemical that's in Prozac and so it works to improve your mood, essentially, by stimulating chemicals in your brain. I believe the standard line is '4 to 6 weeks' as a minimum time to see/feel improvement(s). Hope this helps! Best wishes. Answered by Milda Larche 3 months ago.
you sound just like me damn... zanax is the only thing that has helped me but than again im scared that im going to have allergic reaction to any other medication becuz i started takin zanax and found out that it wont kill me but im soo bad that i wont even take advil or anything im always scared im going to die... i have to take my blood pressure whenever i feel like im dieing thats the only thing that calms me down other than my zanax becuz i know if my blood pressure is fine than im fine and i know it sounds crazy but find a medicine you will take and buy a blood pressure machine check it when u feel super bad... yeah if ur having a aniexty/panic attack it mite be sky high but keep checking it over and over and if starts to go down you will calm down a realize your not having a heart attack or anything like that and ur not dieing.. if you need any other advice about it email me Answered by Alysia Chlebek 3 months ago.

Now that I've been off of it for a while I gained the 10 pounds back. My appetite is back to normal-I don' overeat. I'm 5'7" 135 lbs now-I was 125 lbs when I was on it. I've been watching my diet and exercising the whole time-aerobic and weight training. I even drink alot of water and take fiber. Though I'm not heavy I do feel heavier being 10 lbs more. I liked the way my ody felt and looked at 125 lbs. Is there anything I can do to get back down to 125 lbs? I've heard of hoodia. Idk if I should take slim fast. Answered by Elroy Kil 3 months ago.
