Can I take Dimetapp cough syrup whilst on Prozac 20mg?
Please help, I can't find the answer anywhere on the net and can't reach a pharmacist. Asked by Aracelis Treston 1 year ago.

The Dimetapp Cold and Cough formulation contains brompheniramine maleate, which is an antihistamine, dextromethorphan hydrobromide, a cough suppressant and phenylephrine hydrochloride, which is a nasal decongestant. Prozac, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) inhibits the enzyme CYP 2D6, which normally metabolizes or breaks down dextromethorphan (DM). Because the dextromethorphan stays in the body, there is increased chance of side effects. Avoid any products containing dextromethorphan while taking the Prozac or any other SSRIs. If you have a dry cough, you want to use a cough suppressant, such as promethazine with codeine. Codeine is the active ingredient which suppresses the cough. Products containing codeine may require a prescription. If you have a productive cough, meaning with phlegm, you should use a product containing guaifenesin, which is an expectorant. These products are for treating the symptom of cough but you may need to find the underlying cause. If your cough lasts more than 7 days, see a doctor. Answered by Devona Noles 1 year ago.

Dimetapp Cough Syrup Answered by Lilliam Haugrud 1 year ago.

It is never wise to drink alcoholic beverages after taking any medication. The side effects of any medication including cough syrup with or without alcohol can be harmful. Usually the side effects are incresed in intensity or duration however sometimes depending on the drug/chemicals the combination becomes dangerous/life threatening. Combining over the counter medications, herbal remedies etc can be equally dangerous. Also don't drive after these meds as drowsiness is common and inhanced by alcohol. Answered by Ta Degan 1 year ago.

No, you should avoid syrup that contains DM (dextrometorphan), there is an important interaction with fluoxetine and DM. Otherwise, you can use cough syrup that doesn't contain DM (e.g. codeine syrup, Ulone, guafeinisine syrup, etc..) Answered by Danyel Flathers 1 year ago.
