About Epilepsy drug "Epanutin" (Phenytoin sodium)?
Anybody knows if taking a dose of 200mg daily of Epanutin (Phenytoin Sodium) for a long time causes a major depression disorder?
Asked by Silvia Brannum 1 month ago.
The drug is called Dilantin in the US. I am a Neurologist, and have used DIlantin for many years. I cannot recall any references in the literature about phenytoin causing depression. I causes many other problems, but not a major depression so far as I know. I have of course had patients on Dilantin get depressed. The problem is establishing a causal relationship. Most of them had pretty good reasons to be depressed. Some of them were hereditary. So, the answer is I don't think so, but that may change someday, when another study comes out. I checked my drug book and I don't see fish oil listed as an absolute contraindication; however, anti-coagulants are listed and fish oil has anti-coagulant properties. You are wise to double check your meds, but please do NOT rely on a computer website answered by the general public for medical information! Check with your treating physician before taking fish oil or ANY over the counter medicine. Answered by Isaura Pihlaja 1 month ago.

Besides Phenytoin Sodium/Dilantin, what other working anti-epileptic drugs are there to control seizure?
I've been taking Phenytoin Sodium/Dilantin for years and my neurologist continues to increase the amount of pills I take to 8 a day; and I wonder if there is some sort of substitute for this I can ask about to control Petit Mal seizures?

Honestly, that's not that much--if you read up, many ppl take up to 1800mg of Neurontin over the course of the day. And the 300 is the STARTING dose for Dilantin. It sounds like you're on a very low, beginning dose of each. Dosages are usually determined by weight, because they have to make sure you're getting enough to actually control your seizures. Your body will metabolize the medication differently based on your weight and age. Answered by Jaimee Lackner 1 month ago.
