About Epilepsy drug "Epanutin" (Phenytoin sodium)?
Anybody knows if taking a dose of 200mg daily of Epanutin (Phenytoin Sodium) for a long time causes a major depression disorder? Asked by Silvia Brannum 3 months ago.

The drug is called Dilantin in the US. I am a Neurologist, and have used DIlantin for many years. I cannot recall any references in the literature about phenytoin causing depression. I causes many other problems, but not a major depression so far as I know. I have of course had patients on Dilantin get depressed. The problem is establishing a causal relationship. Most of them had pretty good reasons to be depressed. Some of them were hereditary. So, the answer is I don't think so, but that may change someday, when another study comes out. I checked my drug book and I don't see fish oil listed as an absolute contraindication; however, anti-coagulants are listed and fish oil has anti-coagulant properties. You are wise to double check your meds, but please do NOT rely on a computer website answered by the general public for medical information! Check with your treating physician before taking fish oil or ANY over the counter medicine. Answered by Isaura Pihlaja 3 months ago.

Dilantin Generic Name: phenytoin (oral) (FEN i toyn) Brand Names: Dilantin Infatabs, Dilantin Kapseals, Dilantin-125, Phenytek, Phenytoin Sodium, Prompt Dilantin (phenytoin) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. Dilantin is used to control seizures It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures The recommended starting Dilantin dosage for those taking extended-release capsules is 100 mg three times daily or 300 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider will most likely measure the amount of Dilantin in your blood and adjust your dose as necessary. The therapeutic or normal range for Dilantin is between 10 and 20. GENERIC NAME: gabapentin BRAND NAME: Neurontin, Gabarone Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that is used for preventing seizures Gabapentin is used with other medications to help control seizures in adults and children (3 years of age and older The effective dose of Neurontin is 900 to 1800 mg/day and given in divided doses (three times a day) using 300 or 400 mg capsules, or 600 or 800 mg tablets. The starting dose is 300 mg three times a day. If necessary, the dose may be increased using 300 or 400 mg capsules, or 600 or 800 mg tablets three times a day up to 1800 mg/day. Dosages up to 2400 mg/day have been well tolerated in long-term clinical studies. Doses of 3600 mg/day have also been administered to a small number of patients for a relatively short duration, and have been well Both Dilantin and Neurotin are anticonvulsants. Dilantin 300mgm is given to CONTROL seizures. Neurotin 300 mgm is used to PREVENT seizures The starting dosages are not excessive. Actually, 300 mgm is the actual recommended starting dosage for Dliantin. For Neurotin the recommended starting dose is 300 mg three times a day.. The doctors will be doing a lot of tests to determine the cause of your seizures. .. Answered by Addie Bachhuber 3 months ago.

Honestly, that's not that much--if you read up, many ppl take up to 1800mg of Neurontin over the course of the day. And the 300 is the STARTING dose for Dilantin. It sounds like you're on a very low, beginning dose of each. Dosages are usually determined by weight, because they have to make sure you're getting enough to actually control your seizures. Your body will metabolize the medication differently based on your weight and age. Answered by Jaimee Lackner 3 months ago.

I've taken both of these med's and that's not alot! Hope you feel better! Answered by Logan Lumbley 3 months ago.
