The mucinex is the same as guaifensin. It loosens mucus membranes. Kind of like when you have a stuffed up nose, you take sudaphed to make it run again. There is something going around and I have had a problem for about a year with my ear. Keep complaining to my Dr and she keeps saying yes there is fluid in it. like yea and it hurts. I found that taking the mucinex Did help but I had to take benydryl as well to dry it up after it was loosened up. take as much of the mucinex as you can. Think it says take like 1 3xper day. Well I took 2 twice a day. Now the doctor that I work for who I can't have because my insurance doesn't have him on there list... his wife gave there 2 children cortisone cream placed in the ear and there ear aches cleared up fast. I more than likely spelled that wrong. You can also try put white vinegar at room temp into year ear and wiggle your ear lob around and try to get it down in as far as you can. this is an old remedy for swimmer ear. very safe. Hope one of these works for you. Answered by Keri Feauto 2 months ago.

Is Mucinex DM for day or night?
Hi i have a cold, when should I take Mucinex DM? Is it for day or night time dosage? I don't know if i take it before i go to sleep or will it keep me up? Thanks Asked by Pamella Chisler 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM is for night time. Mucinex DM contains a 30 mg. dose of dextromethorphan. To compare, an adult dose (2 tsp.) of regular-strength Robitussin DM contains 20 mg. 30 mg. is within the safe limits, but you wouldn't want to take more than that, for sure! Muscinex DM can make u little nausea, confuse, and dizziness. but you should stop taking the Mucinex DM. Go back to regular Mucinex. Answered by Ulysses Orlander 2 months ago.

Can I take Dimetapp Cold and Allergy with Mucinex DM?
The Dimetapp Cold and Allergy is just for runny nose, etc. It does not have DM in it. Would it make me sick/be a bad reaction or can I take it without worrying? The Mucinex helps my chest and cough, but not my runny nose and head pressure. Not to mention my desire to sleep. Asked by Tamika Zaldivar 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM and other Meds...?
I am taking Mucinex DM, and I'm wondering if I can take Ibuprofen and/or Nyquil all together, and if not, which combinations can I take with each other? Asked by Cheryle Toyne 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM (Guafenesin: expectorant & Dextromethorphan: cough suppressant) and Ibuprofen are fine together. Nyquil? I would not recommend taking Nyquil with the two. Depending on which Nyquil you are taking(combinations vary between antihistamine + decongestant + pain reliever + cough suppressant), it already contains the cough suppressant and pain reliever. If you are trying to fall asleep at night in addition to the Mucinex DM and Ibuprofen you may want to try Benedryl allergy relief for the sleep. If you just want a decongestant in addition to the two then take a simple Sudafed. I hope this helps you out. Feel better! Answered by Serina Sinning 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM is not for allergy. It is for cough (DM) and the guaifenesin is expectorant, which will loosen the stuff in the lungs. Sudafed is not for allergy per say. It is decongestant. It's taken when your sinus are clogged. You need antihistamine for allergy symptoms. Claritin / Allergra / Zyrtec / Benadryl (in the order of weak to strong) Answered by Jason Brachle 2 months ago.

Mucinex for phlegm/mucus in throat?
I have a lot of phlegm and mucus in my throat and I want to get rid of them. The Mucinex I have at home is Mucinex DM and it's a cough suppressant and a expectorant. Although I don't have a cough, can I still take the Mucinex? Also, does it get you drowsy and sleepy?? Asked by Karl Short 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM is used for cough and mucus build-up, so if you’re just experiencing the mucus I would recommend regular Mucinex (Guaifenesin) is an expectorant medication that will help loosen and thin the mucus that is in the lungs. This will help make a cough more productive in order to help remove a lot of phlegm and mucus. The down-side of guaifenesin is that there is very little data to prove it is effective at nonprescription strengths. It is important that you take one tablet every 4 hours with a full glass of water (at least 8 ounces). There are two types of Mucinex and it is important to differentiate if you have regular release which is to be taken every 4 hours or an extended release brand and these are to be taken every 12 hours. I would absolutely recommend completing the whole package of Mucinex product to see a full effect, and this may be 5-7 days of therapy. Mucinex cannot thin mucus that has already formed, however it can help thin new mucus as it is being produced. If your condition persists for more than 7 days or you begin to develop a fever, sore throat, rash or headache, it is important that you contact your doctor. Do not take more than 2400mg of regular release Mucinex in a 24 hour period, or take more/less than directed by the manufacturer. It is most important to remember to increase your water intake while on this medication. The fluids will provide additional help to break up the mucus and stop the congestion. There are times when you feel extremely helpless regarding your sore throat. At times you try several syrups just to get rid of such issues but then most of the time you are disappointed. Try other teas. I think green tea is great for that. You'll probably want to have them without sugar or cream, though. Definitely avoid milk products; they stimulate mucus buildup. Answered by Francisco Tabios 2 months ago.

These pills have 1200 mg of guaifenesin and 60 mg of DXM. The pill is mostly yellow with a white layer on the top. I have a few questions If i were to take 10 of these, that would be 12,000mg of guaifenesin which does not sound safe to me. (the 600 mg of DXM is fine) Does anyone know if this is an incredibily high amount of guaifenesin to take? I mean, the pills themselves are 1200 mg a piece. Secondly, it says that the pills are extended release, I have a soccer game tomorrow at 11. If i took this at 11 tonight, would it still be affecting me at 11 the next day (the guaifenesin that is). Lastly, does anyone know which side of the pill is the DXM and which is the Guaifenesin? There is one layer, which is huge, and it is yellow, and the other layer which is much much smaller and it is white. Is the smaller white layer the DXM? Answered by Issac Wittmeyer 2 months ago.

Ok. First, the two colors on Mucinex, represent the two layers that the pill has: one is immediate release, the other one is extended release; which means that the smaller layer will dissolve first and the bigger layer will dissolve slowly to give the 12 hour action of the drug. In theory, both layers should have DXM. Don't think on cutting one layer to take the other, this will destroy the integrity of the extended release tablet and may be harmful. Why would someone take 10 Mucinex tablets? It's not like 10 will help more than one. Also, you have to drink plenty of water to make guaifenesin work. And the pills are 1,200mg because they are extended release, so your body won't receive that whole dose at once. And taking more than the recommended dose is never safe. The max. daily dose is 2,400mg. I don't think the guaifenesin will affect you on your soccer game (more than the fact that you are sick and should be resting). Answered by Nola Cannon 2 months ago.

Mucinex 1200 Mg Extended Release Dosage Answered by George Kilker 2 months ago.

Guaifenesin thins the mucus in the air passages and makes it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways, allowing you to breathe more easily. It relieves the coughs of colds, bronchitis, and other lung infections. Consult your doctor or the pharmacologist. Please see the web pages for more details on Guaifenesin (generic name) Mucinex (brand name). Answered by Kerry Bollacker 2 months ago.

Would it be beneficial to take Mucinex DM with Azithromycin?
I visited my doctor yesterday and he told me I probably have bronchitis. I have a lot of mucus in my chest and always cough it up. He prescribed Azithromycin for the bronchitis. Would it help to take Mucinex DM or would that make things worse? Thanks Asked by Onie Blessinger 2 months ago.

The Mucinex helps water down mucus so that when you cough it is more easily removed. Drinking water(tea) helps it work, but sugar and milk products make for more mucus. The DM would only be good if your so tired from coughing that you cannot sleep or rest. Coughing is an important protective mechanism, but very strong hacking coughs actually damage your lungs. A steam vaporizer usually also helps (usually you need to add a 1/2 teaspoonful of baking soda or salt to get it running). If your bronchitis started at first from an allergy, say like to dust mites or animal dander then consider (after you recover) in taking a non-drying, no drowsy anti-histamine like Claritin (Loratadine). It along with Mucinex are available for cheap as a generic at the Dollar General stores. Answered by Shaina Merrion 2 months ago.

Mucinex is safe to take with Claritin D. Mucinex has been around a lot longer than people know and it actually has very few side effects with other drugs. One problem I would expect is it might make you dry in your sinuses. If your nose and throat starts to feel dry or scratchy. Get a Saline Nasal spray and use as needed to help relieve this. Can I take mucinex dm after completing the z pack last week?
Asked by Norman Androlewicz 2 months ago.

Mucinex DM is dextromethorphan and guaifenesin. The dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. The guaifenesin helps loosen chest congestion. Taken together, this will allow you to voluntarily cough up secretions "stuck" in your upper respiratory system. Without knowing your signs/symptoms, diagnosis, or whether you have any drug allergies, it's probably safe for you to take Mucinex DM. You can also buy the generic "dextromethorphan and guaifenesin" if you don't want to spend extra on the brand name. Answered by Alex Clinker 2 months ago.

Sure, you can. Answered by Earnest Ledenbach 2 months ago.
