Any difference between different types of diphenhydramine hydrochloride?
I go through quite a bit of benadryl to deal with allergies. Is there any reason why I shouldn't start buying the cheap, generic over-the-counter sleep aids containing the same dose (25mg) of diphenhydramine hydrochloride as benadryl?
If you live in the United States then the FDA should ensure that any product advertised as containing 25mg dephenhydramine HCL will be the same as benadryl (the pink ones). If you take the green ones it'll have additional ingredients as well.

Is diphenhydramine hydrochloride and doxylamine succinate ok to take together?
Im sick, and i saw that benadryl has diphenhydramine hydrochloride and nyquil has doxylamine succinate...can i take them both? They're both antihistamines...
Are you taking the benadryl to help you sleep or to relieve your congestion? You really only need one or the other, not both. Just take the Nyquil, but be aware that it contains acetaminophen (tylenol), which can be VERY DANGEROUS if you overdose. Don't take anything else that has acetaminophen if you're taking Nyquil. It's also very important to stay hydrated when you're congested; it'll help things clear out faster.

I hope you feel better soon!
Diphenhydramine hydrochloride to lower blood pressure?
would it be safe to take Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) to lower my blood pressure ?Will tihs work?like a pill a day?or a pill every two days?
sdoog degamad
It's an antihistamine, Benadryl, and it is not a medication that treats hypertension. Antihistamines are loaded with potential side effects one being hypertension. It won't work.

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride and Chlorpheniramine maleate?
Is there and difference between diphenhydramine hydrochloride and Chlorpheniramine maleate or are they both the same thing thanks.
I am Dr Sonia . I am an ENT Specialist [Specialist in diseases of the Ear ,Nose ,Throat and Head and Neck Surgery] practising in Bangalore ,India.
Diphenhydramine and Chlorpheniramine are both first generation antihistmines. They are not the same drug but belong to the same category of medicines.
Diphenhydramine is a component of the popular Benadryl available over the counter and chlorpheniramine is present in many cold and cough remedies such as piriton.

It is not a good idea to combine both the medications unless recommended by your doctor.

Can you give a dog dye free allergy cvs brand( diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25mg?
I went to the vet for my 4month boxer puppý cause she had bumps on her back and it was a allergic reaction so my vet recommended me to get beadryl with diphenhydramine. So I wanna make sure this is safe to do so and gave me a prescrib of steriods to give her for four days
Just took aspirin when can I take theraflu?
I am feeling ill and thought that perhaps an aspirin would do (325mg) Well it didn't. I took the aspirin about an hour ago. How long do I have to wait until I take theraflu? acetaminophen 650 mg, diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25 mg, phenylephrine hydrochloride 10 mg
Jennifer Thorson
you can take the theraflu now.
Is there a sleep aid with Diphenhydramine Citrate (not HCl), but no painkiller?
Diphenhydramine Citrate works great for me (much better than Diphenhydramine HCl), but I can't find it without Advil/Tylenol mixed in!
There's no reason one would work well while the other wouldn't. The likely explanation is that the NSAID pain killers are what you're really after. The pain killing and anti-inflammatory effects can help you sleep.

So far as I know, the only reason you'd actually want the citrate is if hydrochloride itself is undesirable. I doubt you'll find a diphenhydramine citrate preparation on its own in an OTC product.
What is an effective natural or over-the-counter treatment for insomnia?
not one with diphenhydramine hydrochloride.

Is there a risk of addiction to the paracetamol tablet under the brand name UNIFLU?
Uniflu tabs contains among others (i) paracetamol 500mg, (ii) diphenhydramine hydrochloride 15mg, (iii) phenylephrine hydrochloride 10mg. It is indicated for symptomatic relief from influenza, colds, nasal & sinus congestions, coughing, fever, headaches, allergic conditions, hayfever, etc.
Lonely Man
There is no physiological mechanism by which anyone can become addicted to paracetamol. There have been reports of addiction to combination products where paracetamol is combined with an opioid medicine, but this has nothing to do with the paracetamol component.
Phenylephrine hydrochloride has had cases of addiction however tolerance is more reported and is recognised in most countries as non addictive.
Im more concerned about diphenhydramine hydrochloride which continuous use of this medication can lead to dependency and addiction.

I suggest you seek medical help if you feel you are unable to stop taking this medication
What are the side effects of Diphenhydramine hydrochloride?
Nytol, Benadryl, other sleeping pills over-the-counter
Tierro del Fuegas Enchiladas
Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (trade name Benadryl, as produced by J&J, or Dimedrol outside the U.S. & Canada. Nytol as a sleeping pill.) is an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine, sedative and hypnotic. It may also be used for the treatment of extrapyramidal side effects of typical antipsychotics. It is a member of the ethanolamine class of antihistaminergic agents.

Like many other first generation antihistamines, diphenhydramine is a potent anticholinergic agent. This leads to profound drowsiness as a very common side-effect, along with the possibilities of motor impairment (ataxia), dry mouth and throat, flushed skin, rapid or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia), blurred vision at nearpoint due to lack of accommodation (cycloplegia), abnormal sensitivity to bright light (photophobia), pupil dilatation (mydriasis), urinary retention (ischuria), constipation, difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss, visual disturbances, hallucinations, confusion, erectile dysfunction, and delirium. Some side effects such as twitching may be delayed until the drowsiness begins to cease and the person is in more of an awakening mode. Diphenhydramine also has local anesthetic properties, and has been used for patients allergic to common local anesthetics like lidocaine.

Does any of these contain Cortisone?
Few years ago a dr put me on Cortisone eye drops which increased my eyes pressure. When I went to my original dr she told me that I could lose my sight, because my eye pressure was very high. It was 30 in both eyes.

Anyway, now I use a product (decongestant, antiseptic & anti-histaminic) called Ocumethyl which contains the following:
1- zinc sulphate B.P
2- Naphazoline hydrochloride U.S.P.
3- Diphenhydramine hydrochloride B.P
4- Methylene blue E.P

Does any of those ingrediants contains Cortisone?
None of the ingredients you list are compounds themselves. They are individual components of the compound that makes your medicine what it is. If the Ocumethyl had cortisone in it it would list it as a separate ingredient. Hopefully your pharmacist and your doctor would know if cortisone were in your meds, and if it is important to stay away from it you should make double sure that they know about that.... Good luck!
Can someone tell me why most MDs don't recommend taking the antihistamine DYPHENHYDRAMINE HCL (25mg) for sleep?
Diphenhydramine has sedative properties and is widely used in nonprescription sleep aids with a maximum recommended dose of 50 mg (as the hydrochloride salt) being mandated by the U.S. FDA. In the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries, a 50–100 mg recommended dose is permitted.

The drug is an ingredient in several products sold as sleep aids, either alone or in combination with other ingredients such as acetaminophen (paracetamol). An example of the latter is Tylenol PM. Examples of products having diphenhydramine as the only active ingredient include Unisom gelcaps (the tablet form contains doxylamine, a different active ingredient), Tylenol Simply Sleep, Nytol, and Sominex (the version sold in the US; that sold in the UK uses promethazine).
Thanks for ALL your great answers!!!
A question I was also frustrated with! I think most doctors don't recommend it because it is really easy to build a tolerance to it, and then you don't have that as an option for allergies etc.

I wish allergy specialist would warn you as well. I had an appt with an allergy specialist, and they did not warn me that tylenol pm was actually acetaminophen and dyphenhydramine.
It definitely needs to be marked on the bottles and doctors need to advise patients to try it short term before giving an Rx for a "knock you out" pill. If your sleep disorder is associated with something other than a short term sleep slump, then the dyphenhydramine won't work anyway.

I also wish they would have people look into Melatonin in the supplement aisle. Worked like a charm for a couple of my family members, but didn't help me much.
what happens if you mix diphenhydramine hydrochloride and dextromethorphan?

what is stronger 25 mg of diphenhydramine hydrochloride or 10 mg of cetirizine for insect bite type rash itch?
I have the cetirizine, but if the other would work better, I'd go get the Benadryl
Love Life
You can call your local pharmacist for their opinion on this.

Personally, I'd recommend the Benadryl.
What's the difference between diphenhydramine HCI 25 mg and diphenhydramine citrate 38 mg?
That's all. Thanks.
HCL and citrate is just the chemical combinations that go along with the diphenhydramine they hci and citrate are both acidic no idea what diphenhydramine is for thought need more info do a yahoo medicine search for pill strengh 38 is obiously larger then 25 mg so the main result from decutive reasoning is the difference between diphenhydramine HCI 25 mg and diphenhydramine citrate 38 mg is 13 mg and diffrent acidic compounds

but dont quote me on that im smart but no doctor or phamicist
can i take these medicines together?
I'm really sick and having trouble sleeping, i just want to be knocked out for awhile. Can i take 2 Vicks nyquil liquicaps (Doxylamine succinate 6.25 mg per capsule) and some Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride together? How much diphen should i take? 50MG?
50MG diphen not doxy

How long does diphenhydramine hydrochloride last in your system?
I am taking a trip and am going early morning, it is a 4 hour flight, and I hate flying. I want to take my sleeping pills but don't want to be horribly tired when the flight is over. I usually take 50mg but I have ones for 25mg. How much should I take and how long will it last?
Both dosage and duration vary widely between individuals. If you usually feel okay to get up after 6-8 hours of sleep then you metabolize it normally and there's a good chance you'd just be a little groggy after 4-5 hours.
what if any is the difference between Chlorpheniramine Maleate&Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride in Antihistamines
I've had really bad alergic reaction in/on my skin my doctor prescribed 4 pills at once not to exceed 8 in 24 hour period. That seems to be working on my skin only it knocks me out cold. Im trying to find out if there r any alternatives, thank you ,your answer is greatly appreciated.
Well, for one thing both are antihistamines. ALL antihistamines have the side effect of drowsiness. Diphenhydramine, is used in products such as bendryl, and in night time sleep aids. Chlorpheneramine is used in some medications that help to clear up a cough, or to help you breathe better when you are stuffed up and is usually only found in prescription medicines. As I haven't worked in a pharmacy for about 4 years now, some newer medications may contain it now. Unfortunately, any antihistamine will have that sleepiness side affect. Ask your doctor to prescribe you something else with either less of a dosage of antihistamine, or something else altogether. Just be sure that he knows all over the counter medications and prescription medicines that you are currently taking so that he won't prescribe something that will react with anything else you are taking. Good Question and best of luck to you and yours.- James
My knee became inflamed but there is no pain. It is swollen around & behind the knee. Does anyone?
have an idea what may be the cause? I elevated my knee the first 24 hours & took Ibuprofen. Today I took Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride to counteract an allergic reaction if any. I find it uncanny that there is no pain. The swelling is going down somewhat. I am just bewildered as to why it happened.
Try Rice for the inflammation to go down and reduce swelling,

RICE Stands for Rest, ICE, Compression and Elevation
Rest is required initially depending on how long it takes to recover.
I – Stands for ICE. You can ICE massage directly on where it hurts. Take Styrofoam cup filled with water and Freeze it. Remove the bottom portion of the cup and use it to massage. Don’t do this more than 20 minutes at any given time. Do ICE Massage 2 to 3 times a day based on the pain level. You can also try to keep ice bag on your knee or where it hurts. Usually Ice massage is more effective than ice bag.
Compression: Use Compression bandage to keep the swelling out. You can use this while taking rest. If you don’t feel comfortable you don’t have to compress it.
Elevation: Leg or your knee has to be kept elevated above your heart while you are lying down. This will bring the swelling down. You can do this for few minutes a day or while taking rest.
You don’t have to do all of it, See whichever suits you.
After few days of RICE treatment you can start doing strengthening and stretching exercise gradually to strengthen the muscle and get back to normal lifestyle. Listen to your knee during exercise and don’t push is too hard. Pull back the strengthening exercise if you think there is pain and restart when the pain is reduced.

You can also ask your doctor to prescribe for Flextor Patch or VOlteran gel for inflammation to subside. THese are directly applied on the pain area - GOod luck with your recovery
can you take a benadryl and an ibuprofen at the same time or will they cause some type of bad reaction?
The benadryl (for my allergies) says not to use with any product containing diphenhydramine but the ibuprofen(for my period cramps) doesn't have diphenhydramine. is it okay to take both?
advil pm is just that combo! no probs!
Can I take Diphenhydramine and Loratadine at the same time?
I use Claritin (Loratadine) for allergies everyday. Sometimes I find myself sleepless and have found Simply Sleep (Diphenhydramine) to be sometimes useful but sometimes find myself wide awake even longer. Now I'm wondering if this is smart since both are anithistamines. Is it counter-productive? Dangerous?
You probably should not take Diphenhydramine and Loratadine at the same time. They are both antihistamines... they work along the same medical pathway. There is the strong chance that you could overdose by taking both of them.

If you are having severe seasonal nasal/sinus allergies... I recommend Nasalcrom. Nasalcrom is a non-prescription medication originally produced to help fight children's asthma. It is a salt that binds to Mast Cells. Mast cells are the cells in your body that release histamine, thereby causing all your nasal problems. Nasalcrom binds to the mast cells and keep them from releasing the histamine in the first place.

Because Nasalcrom works on a different pathway, you can use it AND take an antihistamine without ill effect.

The only drawback? It takes 1 or 2 weeks for the salt to build up in your system enough to fight off the allergies. Basically, you need to start taking it before your allergy season hits, or as it just starting. You also have to take it pretty regularly at first (about every 4-6 hours). Still, it has few (if any side effects) and works great against nasal and sinus allergic rhinitis.

Is Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (Sleeping pill) safe for very rare usage just to sleep early ?
Sometimes I get a lot of sleep which causes me to wake up till late hours next night, in order to avoid this I take a sleeping pill with the formula mentioned in the title. I do it very rarely, Is it safe ?
Better to try to manage the things without a pill.

Can I take Inderal and Sleep Aid Simultaneously?
I am taking a relatively small dosage of Inderal (actually Propranolol) for anxiety and was wondering if I would have any negative side effects by taking Diphenhydramine HCL at night to help me fall asleep earlier in the night... What do you think?

Right now my dosage is 1 40mg tablet twice daily of Propranolol.

I don't know how Diphenhydramine works so I didn't know if they would effect each other if taken together?

Thanks for your help.
Call your local pharmacy, (any will answer your question), and ask the pharmacist.

Can anyone help me with my sleep issues? Prescription sedatives question.?
Hello, I've had insomnia for about a year now, I've tried several different sleeping medications, but none of them seem to work just right. I started with Xanax, 4 milligrams a night, that stopped working after 4 months, it must be a tolerance issue. I then was started on Seroquel XR, but I didn't like how long it took to work.

I then was started on Seroquel instant release, at first, it was 300 milligrams, that didn't help much, I was switched doses to 600 milligrams, it worked great for my sleeping problems, but I was experiencing what I think was overdose issues. while the sedation effect kicked in after 20 minutes of drinking it, I started to experience trouble breathing, and my pulse would drop to about 45, it felt terrible, I would think I was dying of cardiac arrest.

I just started Trazadone Hydrochloride 300 milligrams, but it takes 600 milligrams just to give me mild sedation. Is there any powerful sedative that anyone reading this knows of any powerful prescription medication that won't give me any heart or breathing trouble? I've read that hydroxyzine works very well, what are your opinions? This will be very appreciated, my doctor seems to know nothing about treating severe insomnia, thank you very much for your responses.
FYI, I forgot to mention I was also started on temazepam a month ago, I took 30 30MG pills and felt no effects, I must have an extreme tolerance to benzos now.
One other thing I just remember, I've also tried 300 milligrams of diphenhydramine, that had completely no effect. (Tylenol PM) the one with just diphenhydramine in it.
i think that you should move on to other forms of treatment i also would think that you dont have a very good doctor if he is consistantly prescribing you such dangerous medications and it is more than apparent that your dr. doesnt know what he is doing. most big hospitals have sleep disorder clinics, maybe you should check into one, try homeopathic treatments, drink chamamile tea, there is also melatonin, there are many options available to you you also have to want to try other things but it seems to me that you like having these drugs take over your life and if that is the case you also need to go to detox, good luck
Cetirizine hydrochloride (zyrtec) from online pharmacy?
hi...i used an online pharmacy to buy 180 10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride pills (generic zyrtec...for allergies)...normally they are oval but the ones that came in the mail are round and unmarked. they came packaged in little boxes labeled cetirizine hydrochloride and it has all the info on the boxes and also the bubble packs but ive never seen them round and unmarked before. i just want to make sure that i didnt get ripped off and that they are in fact 10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride. any help is appreciated. thanks!
generics never look like the brand name pills.

if you are concerned, call or email the pharmacy and double check that you got the right med, but if the package has good labeling then you should be ok

Does having diphenhydramine(cough suppressant)&ammonium chloride (expectorant) in a cough mixture contradict?
This is the formula seen in Benadryl Original Cough Mixture and it says that its given for dry coughs. If so, then why would they add an expectorant which ends up producing more mucous but suppress the exit of phlegm with diphenhydramine? Wouldn't the buildup of phlegm inside the body cause problems?

Would you also recommend this preparation for someone with a chesty cough but wants something to help them sleep? (since chesty cough preparations have expectorants or mucolytics which encourage you to cough up the phlegm and you don't want to be coughing in your sleep).

Any help on this would be great. Cheers!
miss lala
I definitely think that taking a "drying" antihistamine like Benedryl is a BAD idea when you are trying to get rid of mucus/phlegm. I'd stick with something that is simply a decongestant/expectorant combination (or separate medications); you should also avoid caffeine. Also be sure to drink lots of water, so that the expectorant has something to work with. If your cough has been going on for more than a week and you are not improving, you should be seen by your physician.

To calm the cough, if you have codeine available, it works very well; if you do not have access to codeine, then get something that contains dextromethorphan. It's not quite as good, but it's the next best thing.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

ibuprofen pm hallucinations high?
So I`ve heard you can get a good high from pm medications like tylenol and advil pm. I only have equaline ibuprofen pm, which on the bottle, says “ibuprofen and diphenhydramine citrate tablets, 200mg/38mg”

How many should I take to get a good high for the night?
Oh also, don't comment if you're just gonna give me crap about it, mind your own business.

diphenhydramine is the active ingredient that gives you hallucinations if you take enough. And like I said before, don't post if you're gonna give me crap about it. I want actual answers about my question, thanks.
Also, I am definitely not 14. I've had my share of doing drugs like DXM, but all I have is this for now and I know I xanadu get a good I'm obviously aware it can be harmful, hence me asking about it before I tzke
Taking an excess of medication containing ibuprofen in order to get a high is dangerous & a fantastic way to kill your liver or give yourself a seizure.

Since you said you were set on this, though, get yourself a medication that only contains diphenhydramine -like benadryl, the over-the-counter allergy medicine. You can get 25mg of diphen per benadryl tab, so you might end up having to take a few more pills, but you'll still have a liver in the morning.

Also, diphen can give you really bad dry mouth & water retention, so make sure you drink a lot of water when you trip, otherwise you'll be incredibly puffy in the morning.

Edit to say that you should take btw 150 & 200 mg of diphen to trip. That adds up to about 6-8 benadryl tabs.
