Hi all, I had a bad cough and the doctor prescribed Cefuroxime Axetil tablets 500mg (one pill), twice a day for a total of 1g a day. I read the instruction wrong, so I was taking two pills (1g), twice a day for a total of 2g a day. I did this for almost three days before I discovered my mistake. I haven't seen any bad effect except my skin has develop itches that move around and I hope the itch will goes away soon. Are there any other bad effects I should be careful about? I have finished all my medicine and my cough has gotten better. Thanks a lot! Answered by Treva Bosh 6 months ago.

500mg twiced dailly is the maximum dosage stated for cefuroxime so you were certainly taking a high dose. Serious overdose would have manifested as seizures. If you haven't experienced this then you are probably okay. However I would suggest you see your doctor and explain the situation as skin rash is an adverse effect of cefuroxime. Also if you experience other symptoms such as nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; anorexia; abdominal pain or cramps; flatulence; colitis; serum sickness–like reactions (eg, polyarthritis, arthralgia, fever); phlebitis or thrombophlebitis, see your doctor immediately. I'm allergic to penicillin & when I've needed an antibiotic my dentist had put me on clindamycin. If you have an infection you need to have it looked @ immediately before it gets worse. Answered by Hannah Mang 6 months ago.

Cefuroxime Axetil 500 mg tablets during 3 to 4 weeks of pregnancy? Is it safe for the baby?
My wife is having Urinary tract infection for last 2 weeks, she is 4 weeks pregnant. She has been taking Cefuroxime Axetil 500 mg tablets for almost 10 days, doctor says urine reports shows its getting better. Is it safe for the mother & baby? Please comment, we are worried. Doctor says its no harm for the baby! Asked by Millie Pequeno 6 months ago.

Cefuroxime is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin group, which has not demonstrated harm to pregnant women or the children. It is pregnancy category B, which means there are no studies that proves any harm to the baby. If you have any questions about any meds for your wife, you can call any pharmacy and they can tell you the same info I wrote. Every med has a US pregnancy category. Best wishes. Many UTI medicine's are safe during pregnancy, although I'm not familiar with the one you're currently taking. Your physician wouldn't prescribe anything that's harmful to the mother & baby - but if you really want piece of mind, perhaps you should just ask another practitioner. To help with the UTI: - Drink lots of cranberry juice or eat cranberries - Drink lots of water That will help to keep the urinary tract healthy after the meds have done their work. Hope this helps! They wouldn't have her on it if it wasn't safe for her to be taking it. Answered by Rosana Treaster 6 months ago.

Has anyone used cefuroxime axetil for strep throat?
Asked by Louanne Killen 6 months ago.

Usually something in the penicillin family is prescribed, but cefuroxime is a good choice as well to treat strep throat. It might be given in the case that a patient has a penicillin allergy. Cefuroxime is a second generation cephalosporin. Cephalosporins will always kill Group A strep (the organism that causes "strep throat"). Answered by Wendy Turnbough 6 months ago.
